After the first actions of Stańczyk(A), I decided to once again employ
the practice of artistic appropriation. In January 2021, a new figure emerged,
inspired by the mythical Krakow princess. On a winter morning, from
the tomb rose W.A.N.D.A.
This was a video performance, executed on Wanda’s Mound in
Nowa Huta. In the film, we see a ghostly figure standing on the hill, dressed
in a long white gown and wearing a balaclava. In her hands, she holds a long
staff with a banner waving at the top. Later in the performance, the figure uses
two signal flags to send a message via semaphore code – „Wanda, wake up!”
The appeal, which might visually resemble the summoning of spirits, was
meant to address women whose right to self-determination had been brutally
violated by politicians. Through this symbolic gesture, I aimed to awaken the
mythical Wanda in every woman, encouraging her to take to the streets and
reclaim what had been taken from her.
